To my friends on the left:
You talk a lot about children (ironically in spite of your views on children not yet born).
In fact, you reference this group nearly every time you want to combat something a Republican is doing; that some policy is killing our children’s futures.
Here’s the deal: I’m going to take you at your word. I’m going to choose to believe that you truly want the very best for our children’s future, and that you’re not using them as some kind of human shield in the bloodsport that is politics.
So why precisely are you doing this to them? To their future?
Put bluntly, you’re creating a monster.
You are actively ruining any real opportunity to have valuable conversation in this country; you’re erasing reality, suppressing truth, celebrating dishonesty and otherwise creating a chaos unlike anything we’ve seen in this country.
You’ve radically changed how we dialogue.
We can’t have a serious debate about how to be responsible with the abundant land we’ve been blessed with because you’re too busy writing stories about how the world will end because Donald Trump—in backing out of the Paris Climate Agreement—simply refused to bankroll poorer nations who have no binding legal obligation to actually do anything environmentally useful with that money.
You’re destroying trust when you bash the United States for “standing” with Syria and Nicaragua in refusing to comply with the Paris Climate Agreement—while utterly ignoring the fact that other despotic regimes like North Korea and Iran happen to be signatories of the agreement.
You’re ruining seriousness when major U.S. news outlets publish headlines like “Not even Merriam Webster can explain ‘covfefe’”… or when outlets actually set up investigations to see if “covfefe” is some kind of Arabic code.
You’re purposely misleading the American people when you publish sensationalist headlines about collusion between Russia and the Trump campaign, only to bury some blip six paragraphs down about how there’s actually no real evidence to support the headline.
You’re squashing civil society when you celebrate breaking the law as honorable and brave—and then hyperventilate when a lawmaker actually calls in the authorities to uphold the law and dares to vocalize self-defense when threatened with bodily harm.
You’re reviving racism and division by celebrating (or staying silent in the face of) the re-segregation of our academic institutions.
Ultimately, you’re teaching the next generation that all they have to do is be vile and dishonest enough—and eventually they’ll get their way. And since you people run the media, entertainment, academia, politics, big business, and so much in between …how many people have the stomach of steel to stand firm in the face of your distortions, threats and character assassinations?
Yeah, I’ll take “Nope” for $500, Alex.
Understand this: the pendulum swings both ways. When you’ve stifled humanity and civility and goodness and truth—well, are you somehow immunized from the consequences? They WILL come back to bite you in the butt. After all, you’re changing society; you’re influencing how the next generation will behave; you’re teaching them that values don’t matter, principles don’t matter—and that anything (and I mean anything) you have to do to win is acceptable. You really don’t think that’s going to affect you someday?
Today, though, you may very well succeed in taking down your political and ideological opponents—regardless of how you get there.
And maybe, just maybe, that’s exactly what you want. Maybe don’t care that you’re silencing debate, so long as you get what you want. Maybe you don’t care that you’re killing civility so long as you get what you want. Maybe you don’t care that you’re lying, so long as you get what you want. But remember, it comes back around. You’re destroying civil, honest society—not just stifling your opponent’s views.
You can claim the right does these things already today. And sure, a few probably do. But guess what? We on the right don’t run the media, or the entertainment industry, or politics for that matter (even when Republicans ARE in charge). We don’t run the industries that shape thought and opinion in this country. That’s on you, my friends.
That’s on you.
And if you’re actually serious about the next generation—you’ll consider the chaotic, dishonest, spineless, inconsistent, uncivil, valueless monster you’re actively creating for them.
